BREAN CHRISTMAS DINNER RALLY

DOLYWERN 36 vans were crammed onto the car park at the Oliver Jones Memorial Hall. The ground was too wet to use the grass areas, but we coped! - mainly thanks to Brian Dilley, his team of marshalls who cleverly devised escape routes, and the co-operation of of our cheerful ralliers; - some of them had traveled quite a long way. We had vans from Cornwall, Kent, Lincolnshire, Anglia, and Yorkshire, as well as from the closer groups of Lancashire and North West Mids & North Wales.
Many thanks to Ruth & Bryan Parkin, Mo & Don Northcott and Veronica England who helped decorate the hall. Our newest member & and MCC recruit, Dave Pickford was our DJ for Friday night, and he had us up dancing until the very end, we had to shoo everyone out of the door to go to bed. Some of us then went to Dave Pickford's van for a night cap and to christen his "new" van. Dave Pickford
Dance class Saturday dawned bright & sunny, encouraging a few of us to go for a walk or get the bus into the nearest town. Everyone was back in time for wobbly coffee and dance classes with Ruth & Bryan Parkin who taught us Smokey Places; Voices of the Highlands; Sleezy slide; Crystal Chandeliers; Stroll along Cha Cha & 1,2,3 waltz. At the end of class Dave Pickford talked us through the dance to "Best of Friends".
In the evening we had a huge American Supper. Everyone had pushed the boat out. - There were salads, sausages, pies, quiches, sandwiches, sausage rolls, a sliced turkey crown and even a chicken curry on the savoury table. The Sweet table was very tempting too. savory buffet table Ruth & Bryan Parkin
Rough Diamond Rough Diamond
Our fantastic entertainers for the evening were "Rough Diamond", who played a good mixture of old and new country, keeping our dancers on the floor. Thank you to Ron & Diana Branson who recommended them. Half way through the evening, Lesley was presented with a beautiful bouquet for her birthday. Charlie & Davina had made her a bouquet of flowers made from tissue paper and pipe cleaners as they said real flowers die. These "everlasting flowers" will be treasured! As will all the cards. This was all a great surprise, as Lesley thought the trilogy was about to take place, as the children paraded through the hall accompanied by the Country and Western flag carried by Nita Mills.

TILLINGBOURNE
foyer

Not as many vans as last week, but we really did have a good time! The school was a great venue. The previous week they had a Western day, and left all the decorations up.

The entrance foyer was decorated with bald headed eagles, huge cacti, rocks, skulls of buffalo, and tombstones. It was very well done, and couldn't have set the scene better. Even the backdrop to the stage was painted as a desert.

Friday night we settled down to enjoy Dave's Country Juke Box. Dave and Vanessa had recently been to Thailand on holiday, and he had bought several silly T shirts (like the "I'm with Stupid" as worn at the last rally!) I think Dave wore a total of 3 different ones this week, and in her haste to get a photo of one of them, Lesley knocked over her glass of wine, smashing the glass. - What a waste! Poor Dave wasn't feeling 100%, but it didn't show as he kept us dancing for over 4 hours. We had to shoo friends out of the door as they were reluctant to go to bed.

dance class Saturday dawned bright and dry, and some of us wandered off to do a bit of shopping. In the afternoon we were in the hall for a free glass of wine and dance lessons with Lesley, who revised 1,2,3 Waltz & Crystal Chandeliers; and taught Cowgirl Twist; Peaches and Cream and County Line Cha Cha. All too soon it was 5pm, and a dash for the vans to have some dinner and get changed ready for the evening.

We were entertained in the evening by Phil T Williams, who sang a real mixture of old and new Country, something for all tastes. At the end of the evening he sang a duet with Vanessa, giving our new friends a taste of what was to come at our next rally!

Our Trilogy for the evening was carried out by Mick Boyce, Charles Taylor and Bob Jones. It was the first time they had done this, and they carried it off very well. Thank you to them.

For the first time ever, we had everybody up on the floor at the same time, at some point both nights running! - So well done everyone.

It was nice to watch John & Rona Smith do partner dances we had not seen before. They have agreed to teach the dance to "Copper Head Road" to us next time we see them, which would be brilliant. Thank you to everyone who donated raffle prizes, your kindness is really appreciated. If you were lucky enough to win one of the embroidered "Home Sweet Motor home" plaques they were made by Beryl Dacombe.

LAMBORNE
It was a nice bright sunny Friday, when vans started to arrive at Lamborne Sports & Social Club.
Unfortunately, the person we were supposed to meet from the club was late, and some of us had leveled ourselves and even put out awnings. It is sods law, ~ we had to move, as the club had 2 football matches on, and where we had parked (along the short side of the pitch) was where the cars were going to park. We were soon parked along the far side of the football pitch. The base of the field was chalk, so when it rained (It was a Bank Holiday after all!), the field drained very quickly. view of vans
28 vans arrived from far flung groups including SWP, NWM&NW, E Mids, Anglia, Kent, Sussex, Surrey, West Wessex, & Avon to name but a few. Some of us took the opportunity to have a fish & Chip supper from the shop in the village which was in walking distance. Nice chips too!
Dave Pickford got us off to a great start, with his Country Juke Box, and the dance floor was soon filled with enthusiastic dancers, who only started to drift away when the bar closed at 11.00pm

Saturday got off to an early start, with the committee making the dance floor bigger by moving a few tables, before Lesley held a beginners dance class, going over the basic steps, as we had many ralliers new to western partner and line dance. We then swung into dance class proper, learning "1,2,3 Waltz" for those who had not done it before, "County Line Cha Cha", "Crystal Chandeliers" (an easy partner dance). Bryan & Jean Wright then took over and taught us "Ziggy" and "Elvis Charleston". This was followed by "Blue Rose Is" a partner dance taught by John & Rona Smith. Meanwhile, Ann Dilley, Jeane & Mike Boyce served us with wobbly coffee and biscuits.

In the evening we were treated to the fabulous Mickey Page, singing many old favourites, and some new ones too. The floor was full all night with eager dancers. Mickey sang 2 songs archipelago. (without music), as well as his romantic signature tune, "My Woman My Wife" which he sang to Hazel his wife. What a great voice! Come the end of the evening, Mickey had to do three encores!!

mickey page & Hazel

Sunday morning we had coffee and held our raffle, as one or two ralliers had to go home. Thank you to all our friends who so generously donated raffle prizes. The table was groaning! Following this the committee had a meeting, finishing just in time for dance class. Thank you to Ann McEvoy who made Lesley a sandwich while she walked her dog.

Dance class got underway, going over the dances taught the day before, and adding "Speak to the Sky" ~ the words were in keeping with it being Sunday, and "Cowgirl Twist".

vanessa
Vanessa sang for us on Sunday evening. Disappointing her male fan club by wearing trousers for her 1st set. She did change into a very short sparkly outfit for the 2nd half though! Sadly Dave & Vanessa had to depart that night as Dave was on call at work. Thank you to Fred Hurley who helped us load all the sound equipment into the trailer, and helped lesley lock up, ensuring she got "home" safely.

Monday morning came too quickly, another few hours in bed would have been nice! Coffee was served, and the answers to the "Brown Paper Cowboy" quiz were given, and it was won by Barry & Debbie Groom.

We signed up 6 new members this weekend, so an extra special welcome to Bryan & Jean Wright from Leicester; Andy & Sue Riddex from Bracknell; Glenda & Stan Green from Kent; Vic & Sharron Mitchell from Bracknell; Patrick and Jean Habbishow from Dorset; Ann & Harry McKenna from London, and Norman & Marge Smith from Surrey.

THE NATIONAL Twenty vans parked up together in the Country and Western area. - We seem to be doubling every year!
banner party So thank you all for your support. Our banner was carried by Charlie & Davina, with Thomas and Harry in the lead, waving the flags. They did us proud!
Ruth & Bryan had us all on our feet for a partner dance class, Teaching Crystal Chandeliers, Enchant cha; Western Weave, Skater Waltz; Sleezy Slide and Barn Dance. It appeared everyone was enjoying it as we were asked to carry on for an extra hour! We had most dancers for the easier dancers, and a few heaps of hysterical partners for the Sleezy Slide. We also sneaked in a couple of line dances in Ruth & Bryans "break". dance class
On Friday, when we had a sunny afternoon we sat down for an impromptu BBQ, suggested by John & Ann McEvoy. A group of us scuttled off to Morrisons to do a trolley dash. There was loads of food left over.

party table

The afternoon of party night saw a group of us painting wall paper stapled to 7 trestle tables. What fun we had! Some of us went back to the vans with as much paint on us as on the table! We set the scene for "our party" by painting a river from the Klondike "Gold Rush".

Mel Harvey had made log cabins out of bamboo, and also some picks and shovels from lolly sticks. - Thanks Mel, a great effort!. Paper tents soaked in tea for the aged dirty look completed the scene. Some of the paint was still wet when we sat down 2 hours later so we were busy dabbing it off with paper towels. It was a good night though, and we managed to cut the cake from the group competition entry into 48 pieces, so we all enjoyed some.

Ann & Claire

Thank you to Brian & Ann Dilley who both entered cakes in the individual competitions. Lesley also entered the design a t shirt competition, Crewel work cushion and Yarn Wrapping. Our group competition entry was stunning. Thank you to everyone who joined in. We weren't placed as Gwen Farler's self hardening bowl of flowers were so good that the judges thought they weren't made of clay! (They did apologise when Gwen corrected them). Well done Gwen, they were beautiful. John Rickards painting got top marks and was brilliant, Thank you John. Thank you also to Sharon Carter who made the florentines; Geoff Ingham who made the snail; Gwen for the card, Mick Boyce for the very tasty cake.

The marks per item were as follows:

Although I wasn't there, because I had to return to work, I hear the closing parade went very well. The banner being carried by Davina and Thomas, with Charlie and Harry walking with them. Thank you to every one who took part, and to Brian Dilley for marshalling the area, it was a great weekend.

CATTLE ANNIES'
7 vans lingered after the National Rally to attend Cattle Annie's Country music round up. Thanks to Brian Dilley they all managed to sit together in the evenings. The first night of the event, there was a committee meeting of the Forest Miners Club in the main hall, so the Country music event was confined to the bar. Daytimes were taken up with trips out into the surrounding areas. In the evenings, MCC members were entertained by "the Soggy Bottom Boys" and Natalie Diamond.

YAXHAM

A great weekend was had at Yaxham. The weather was mainly dry, enabling those of us who wished to, to sit outside, or venture into Dereham by bus. Dave our DJ, arrived on the Friday in a panic as he had crawled around the M25 for ages and was 3 hours later than planned. However, we started on time, and had a great Friday evening with Dave, dancing until 11pm.

DANCE CLASS
On Saturday, Claire Blewett and Jean Clark served coffee when dance class started early for friends new to dance ~ and there were quite a few ~ We went over some of the easy favourites such as 1,2,3 Waltz; & County Line Cha Cha, before learning “Keepsakes”, a new partner dance which Lesley & Mel taught. Brian & Jean Wright then taught a fun Minuet, which most of got right, however, there is always one, and on this occasion there were two! – Dave & Mel went off on a tangent waltzing their way across the floor (or was it a polka?)
BRIAN & JEAN
Lesley & Mel
In the evening we were treated to the lovely Natalie Diamond, who sang many old favourites as well as some new songs, ensuring she sang the tunes for the dances we had covered during the afternoon. It was great to see so many people up dancing, and giving it a go even if they weren’t sure. Thank you to Jean & Brian who prompted us as to which dances we could do, your help is greatly appreciated; - we even remembered the Elvis Charleston which they taught at Lamborne!
Then raffle was drawn on Saturday night to enable those who traveled a long way to get off a bit earlier. Thank you to everyone who so generously donated prizes to the raffle and helped set up and clear away. The music quiz was won on just one answer! – We must make them a bit easier next time!

MALVERN "Western" Motor Home Show
Thirty nine motor homes from the country and Western Group parked together at the Malvern “Western” Motor Home Show, with many others scattered among the non-booked and disabled areas Not only did we have the exhibition area to see displaying a great selection of motor homes along side a huge variety of accessories for the motor home. There were also trade stalls for the “Western” enthusiast selling everything from collar studs to spurs, frock coats and ball gowns, boots and saddle bags. They must have done good trade as the cash point ran out of money!

During the day the “Lone Star Re-enactment group” were performing complete with shoot outs and competitions. There were also displays of “Indian Birds of Prey” (one of whom got loose and settled in the trees adjacent to the MCC area.);  and Living History displays showing how the settlers lived and worked.

In the food court a variety of good country music was on offer to those who wished to sit and listen. Among those who performed here were Pedro; David St Paul plus Cheyenne.  For those of us who wished to learn or just polish up our dancing skills, there were line dance classes in the Wye and Avon halls. A shuttle bus was provided for ralliers who wished to go and explore the town of Malvern on Saturday, and there was also a guided walk across the Malvern Hills, starting at the Herefordshire Beacon (an iron-age hill-fort). It was a bit steep in places, but kept the walkers and their dogs occupied for one and a half hours.
Ann Dilley Tony Mallilieu Davina
Ann Dilley Tony Davina In the evenings we were able to enjoy a full and varied programme of Country entertainment from over 20 acts over the four nights. – It was impossible to hear them all.
Highlight of the whole weekend for the Country and Western Group was the “Best Dressed Westerner” competition. Members had won a category for the past 2 years so we were eager to see how they did this year. They did us proud! MCC C&W members won 3 out of the 4 categories! Tony Mallilieu won the best dressed Gentleman; Ann Dilley was best dressed Lady, and young Davina (cousin to last years winner, Charlie) won best dressed Child. Well done to all of them, and to all the others who entered. I’m glad I did not have to do the judging as everyone looked fantastic!
On Sunday afternoon, the showers we had experienced all weekend dried up and the sun came out. Friends old and new, bought a chair and a large group of us settled down in the sun for cheese and wine (21 litres of it - homemade by Mel Harvey - and it all went!). Soft drinks were enjoyed by the younger members, or those who didn't want to get tipsy.

RUSHDEN AGM

23 vans journied to Southend School Rushden. We were a trifle worried on arrival to find the school were not expecting us due to change of caretaker, head master and office staff!! However, they sorted us out, and looked after us really well. Many of us had a really slow journey due to the impending Papal visit. Unfortunately for him, Dave our DJ, though the school was one we had used before in Oxfordshire, and was later than he had planned. Our artistes for the night arrived early, and were supplied with cups of tea in between booking in vans. It was a bit of a chaotic start! Every one pitched in though and the hall was soon decorated, Dave set up, and dinner fitted in before commencing our evening at 7.30.

Smokey Mountain Boys
Our artistes for Friday night were the fabulous "Smokey Mountain Boys", who kept us singing, clapping and dancing all night. It was lovely to see so many visitors, and to welcome 2 new members.
Smokey Mountain Boys
Ruth & Bryan
On Saturday morning, many of us were seen in Rushden town, pottering around the shops. Some of us even found time for a quick fish & chip lunch! The walk through the park back to the school was lovely. It was easy to see it as the private grounds to the large house which is now a public building.
In the afternoon we had coffee and 3rd Birthday cake, followed by our dance class, which was well attended. Ruth & Bryan held a revision class, going over partner dances -Voices of the highlands; Tempted; Keepsakes & Crystal Chandeliers as well as revising 2 line dances - Rita's Waltz and 1976. Many of us, including my self had forgotten some of them. A special class was held at the very beginning for those of us who had never danced before, teaching the basic steps - this is proving really useful and not only to the beginners. dancers
In the evening, Vanessa sang her heart out for us; and we were able to put into practice the dances learnt during the afternoon. It was a lovely evening, and Vanessa treated us to some of the new songs she had learnt, including a favourite of mine; A plea to the Lord that this day be good. - and good it was. Party go-ers Party
On Sunday morning we held our AGM. sadly saying good bye and thank you to our outgoing committee members who were not standing again for various reasons: Sarah & Ian Cleverly; David Gall; Tony Mallilieu; Brian Dilley & Jack Dempsey. Our new committee was elected, and can be seen on our committee page. Your new Chairman is Roger England who has a strong and enthusiastic committee behind him. We now need the support from members to keep the group moving forward. John Griffin represented COM, and gave us his support and a pat on the back for what we have achieved so far.

STOCKTON-ON-FOREST, YORKSHIRE
What a long drive your committee had. We broke the journey from Plymouth to Stockton-on-Forest at Ashby-de-la-Zouch. The site was nice, but cramped with us and Dave & Vanessa parked on a small patch of gravel at the back of a barn. (and we paid £11.00 per night for the privilege!).
On arrival at Stockton Village hall at midday after long traffic delays. - (The A1(M) was closed due to an accident, and the ring road had long queues too, not a good start,) we were pleased to see we had 3 vans waiting for us. Soon there was a steady flow of motor homes. It would have been nice to have seen a flood of them though!- A good start. The venue was superb – How the Yorkshire get 38 vans in there I do not know!! Thank you to everyone who pitched in and helped decorate .
In the evening we danced to Dave's Country Disco. Many of us were in the party mood already!
Saturday was a beautiful day, and many of us took the opportunity to get the bus to York or to merely walk to the village shop. The village is lovely, a mix of old and new which have been carefully blended in.
In the afternoon, Sue Kay taught us "By Morning" & "Running out of Beer", which was new to all of us. Sue choreographed the dance to "By Morning", such clever people we have within the group! Thank you Sue, well done. Brian & Jean Wright taught us the Sleezy Slide, or as they called "Lowly Places". Mel & Lesley taught Crystal Chandeliers and Keepsakes. Yes, I know we've taught them before, but we had nearly completely new group of friends rallying with us.
What a treat we had in the evening. Our artist was Grand pa T Smith - What a gentle gentleman!!
We were able to listen and dance to songs such as “Some days are Diamonds”; “Little Bitty Tear”; “Send me the pillow (you dream on)”. Grand Pa had a standing ovation, and couldn't leave until he had sung at least 3 more songs. A fabulous night.

BREAN CHRISTMAS DINNER 80 vans from all over the country arrived at Brean on Friday 19th November. It was a lovely sunny day, and even though you wont believe it, warm. Before anyone arrived, your marshalls were to be found dancing up the road, practicing dance steps with Ruth & Bryan Parkin! street dancers
The majority of vans arrived within a few hours of the 2.30pm start time. (We hope next year it will be 10.30am). On arrival everyone was given an envelope containing a site map, rally plaque, barrier pass, Christmas card (just to get in the mood), rally programme 2011, a welcome letter detailing the events of the weekend, and entertainment tickets (detailing their seats for the weekend and their table companions).
The temperature started dropping as everyone started to settle in and put up their Christmas lights. While everyone was arriving, Baz, the site warden, was kind enough to take my dog Max for a walk. (Baz misses his late dog, and Max was to disappear with Baz at frequent intervals over the course of the weekend).
In the evening the mini bus picked us up to take us to the Tavern, where we were entertained by a very demure Vanessa, wearing a very fetching (& Sexy) black dress; and by another favourite singer, Micky Page. In the 3rd and final set they sang a few duets, which we love. The theme for the evening was Tombstone & Crinoline, and there were some lovely dresses to be seen. - The men looked good too! One gentleman celebrated his 85th Birthday, - he danced al night with more gusto than some 20 year olds! Friends started drifting off from 10.30 onwards when the minibus started its shuttle service back to the camp site. minuet
Bob & Beryl Scarlet perhaps?

Saturday dawned, with a dry and sunny morning, and many ralliers took the opportunity to go to Western-Super-Mare or Burnham-on-Sea, while your committee held a meeting in a bar behind the tavern (coffee & biscuits only!) to discuss 2011 (more of that to be circulated to members later). It was then a rush to get back to the vans for a quick lunch, before returning to the Tavern to enjoy Ruth and Bryan Parkin's dance class which was very well attended. Ruth started by teaching basic steps for those who had never danced before. Then a group of us went straight into Rita's Waltz while Ruth sorted her dance sheets and had a quick drink

All too soon it was time to return to the vans to get ready for the evening. The theme for the evening was First Nation and Mountain men; - and some of our more serious westerners were to be found going for a close shave and removing the moustaches of the night before. Well done to the group who called themselves "The Romanies". (They gave us a bit of a parking headache wanting 8 vans together; arriving at intervals!) They threw themselves into the theme nights with enthusiasm, and a whole tribe of Indians filed down to their table in moccasins and plaits. Our artists in the evening were called "Lazy Dog". There was nothing lazy about their music, which was up-beat and had many people jiving the night away. Congratulations to Brian Clarke, who celebrated his 60th Birthday.
Stan & Glenda Romany Indains
Sunday morning arrived, and we assembled for pre-dinner drinks at 11.30am. We all sat down at 12.30 for our Christmas Carvery lunch. The Tavern had once again pulled out all the stops, and we were greeted to beautifully decorated tables, and a large Christmas tree. Staff were on hand to help those of us who needed our plates carried for us as we were invited table by table, up to the two carvery serving points, where we had a choice of succulent Roast Beef or traditional Roast Turkey and an abundance of seasonal vegetables. On completion of the main course, two sweet trolleys wended their way around tempting us with trifle, cheesecake or proffiteroles. Coffee and chocolates bought the meal to a close, and the pound to a penny draw bottle hamper winner was called. - well done Mick and Jeane Boyce, it should go a long way to making the festive season merry. Thank you to everyone who donated a bottle to the hamper, and to Tim Shiner who made a batch of his delicious shortbread. Thank you also to Mel Harvey, who sold the tickets (not a nice job trekking from van to van in the rain and cold wind); and to Terry our compare who chose the winning number the previous evening and sealed it in an envelope for us. Then Roger, our chairman said a few thank you's to members; helpers; visitors and Tavern and Brean staff , and much to my surprise, I was thanked for arranging the Christmas Dinner Rally, and presented with a beautiful bouquet. It is a lovely thought, and much appreciated. - Just to answer the many questions, I am staying with the group as secretary and not retiring, - just handing over some of the jobs I used to do. Ruth Parkin and Veronica England will be booking the venues and artistes in the future, so I hope you will give them both your support.
Jeane & Mick Lesley Christine Peacock Pauline Shiner
It was then time to dance off our lunches with the second of Ruth & Bryan's dance classes where we giggled our way through the Sleazy Slide, and promenaded in a stately manner to "Voices of the Highlands". At 4.30pm we meandered back to our vans for a rest before dressing for the evening, and being picked up by the mini-bus at 7pm. The evenings artistes were Steve Chase & Middy, who joined forces for the 3rd set as "The best of friends". The theme of the evening was Mexican, and the Romanies appeared en-mass in poncho's and sombreros. Once again we all had a great time, and a packed dance floor.
mick & Don Auction Romany Mexicans
During the evening, the Country & Western Group auctioned off a painting donated by the Irish dancers who were holding a competition weekend in a neighbouring hall. Later on a hat was passed round and £110.00 was raised for the Tavern's charity which supports Children with cancer. It was a very successful rally with many bookings taken for the Christmas Party 2011. (And we do not have a date or prices yet!). We also had new members join us and we would like to extend a real warm welcome to Dot and Pat Jones from Dorchester; Ron & Ryan Maddox from the Wirral; Anthony & Susan Begley from Swansea; Lewis & Joan Williams from Tredegar; Rick & Mary Bird from Somerset; and Kingsley Perryman & Norma Willis from Port Talbot. We are so glad you all enjoyed yourselves, and decided to join us. We look forward to seeing you in the New Year!
